Boxing thoughts

I haven't posted about my favorite sport in quite awhile, so I thought I would throw some tidbits out there.

The last couple of weeks have had some decent fights. March 4th, Sugar Shane Mosley TKO'd El Feroz Fernando Vargas in the 10th round due to swelling.

All I can say is "ouch". And Fernando says that he could still see out of that eye. Sure. Feroz, anyone that has seen you fight, knows that you're a warrior. However, sometimes your heart is a little too big. Sometimes you've just got to realize that you're done. Not forever, of course, just for that fight.

One of the most wicked KO's I've ever seen happened in the first undercard fight of that PPV, also. Calvin Brock smacked Zuri Lawrence with a left hook that made Zuri drop like he just got shot in the head. Unreal. Good thing, too, as the fight was completely boring until then.

Just this past weekend, Jeff Lacy travelled to Manchester to fight Joe Calzaghe in a super middleweight unification bout. I have never seen someone get so outclassed from opening bell until the end of the fight. I think Lacy averaged maybe 3 punches landed per round. Calzaghe had to of averaged about 30-40 landed per. I admit, that I picked Lacy to destroy the Welshman, but it just goes to show you. Props to Joe for boxing a perfect fight.

Also this past weekend, Miguel Cotto from Puerto Rico fought in front of a hometown crowd against severely limited Gianluca Branco. Branco ended up retiring in, I believe, the 8th round because Cotto had just pounded his body to the point to where he couldn't take anymore. A punch on the SHOULDER ended it.

On April 8th, Zab "Riverdance" Judah takes on Pretty Boy Floyd Mayweather on PPV. By the way, if you don't get the riverdance reference, check out Zab's fight with Kostya Tszyu to understand. Now, I don't like Judah one bit. I think that he is a punk, he is lazy in the ring, and he's just flat out a jerk. However, I cannot deny that the kid has skills. No chin, but he has skills. He has a ton of power, and an overabundance of speed. He might even be quicker than Mayweather. That is VERY debatable. I am a Mayweather fan, and I'm picking the majority Pound for Pound #1 to beat up on Judah. Remember though, that Judah is a very live underdog. Floyd's chin has never "really" been tested. Mainly due to the fact that its extremely tough to hit the man cleanly. My pick? Pretty Boy wins by TKO around the 8th round.

Another thought...heavyweights suck. Goddamn. They are so freakin' boring right now. How bad is it when the best heavyweight is nothing but an extremely fat former middleweight?! Tell you what, get rid of John Ruiz, Hasim Rahman, and Chris Byrd, and give me Jose Luis Castillo, Diego Corrales, and Jorge Arce any day of the week, twice on Sundays.

'Nuff said...for now.
